Let’s face it, once that warm sun starts beating down on us and we’ve shed the last of our winter blues we want to be outside doing what we love to do whether it’s hiking, swimming or just hanging out with friends. Unfortunately, today we are seeing more and more the damage prolonged exposure to the sun can have. It might be after Labor Day but the sun is still shining which means you still need to protect yourself from those darn UV rays. I always find it amusing that most people only think of sun protection during the hot summer months. Yes, the sun may not be causing the temperature to rise into the 90’s but it does it’s damage all year. You might want to switch to a felt hat like the Bailey Firehole or Bailey Tino instead of your summer straw or cotton sun hat but you need to wear a hat whenever you go out if you’re truly concerned about the danger of skin cancer.

What a crazy weather day it’s been today. When we got out of church this morning it was sunny and 75 degrees. Then it seems almost instantly the temperature dropped 15 degrees and it’s been raining ever since. On days like this there is really only one hat to wear and that’s the Tilley hat. If you’re a regular reader of this blog you know that I frequently talk about skin cancer and proper sun protection. Since today is May first, I thought I’d remind everyone that May is Skin Cancer Awareness month. Even though we haven’t hit summer temps here in the White Mountains we have already seen the seasonal increase in customers asking for hats with certified sun protection. Once summer hits we will have customers walk into the store almost every single day who have had a scare with skin cancer. Skin cancer is one of the most preventable cancers and it doesn’t take a lot of effort.
