Oprah’s Favorite Visor

Monday, March 31st, 2008

It’s back! In the May 2007 edition of O Magazine one of Oprah’s favorite things was a rollable wide brimmed visor…the Ashley by Scala. Well, you guessed it. It’s back for 2008 and is already proving to be a best seller again. It’s available in seven different colors and we’re going to try our best to keep them all in stock. We’ve already had a few customers come in and buy one of each color. Besides the fact that Oprah had it as one of her favorite things a lot of women like it because it has a wide brim, is adjustable in sizing and can roll up making it easy to carry with you.

Countdown To Indiana Jones IV

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

It’s hard to believe but we’re less than 60 days away from the May 22 grand premier of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Last week we sent a few of the Indiana Jones wool felt fedoras to a production company in Texas that was shooting commercials for the new toys that will be coming out with the release of the movie in May. I’ve searched many sites online and I haven’t seen anybody with the selection of Indiana Jones hats that we have here at Aaron Hats. Of course the wool felt and fur felt fedora is the most popular style because it most resembles the hat worn in the movies but there’s a distressed cotton version that has done really well.

We also have several Indiana Jones military and ballcap styles that have become quite popular.

Boston Red Sox Championship Caps

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Since today was opening day in Japan for the Boston Red Sox I figured we’d celebrate their win with Red Sox 3 pack of caps. While supplies last, you can get this 3 pack which consists of an AL East cap, AL Division cap and a World Series cap. All caps are in navy blue and you have a choice of structured or unstructured caps. Since you are buying a three pack you’ll see a savings of over $20 as compared to if you were buying these individually.

Sun Protective Hats

Monday, March 24th, 2008

We always know when Spring has started because customers start coming in and calling asking about hats for sun protection. We need to be careful of the sun all year round but we all pay special attention once we starting moving into the warmer weather. About 1,000,000 people in the USA are diagnosed with skin cancer every year so you can imagine what the numbers are like worldwide.

I have to convey this story from last summer. This husband and wife came into the store and they were looking for a sun hat for him because he had been diagnosed with skin cancer on his ears and nose. I worked with them for a while and he finally decided on a sun hat by Tilley Endurables. Once he found his hat he suggested to his wife that she now try on some hats so she could be protected from the sun. Her response stunned me and her husband. She said “I’ll wait until I get skin cancer.” Ladies and Gentlemen, Please do not do that to your loved ones. Protect yourself, your spouse, your children and anybody you care about by wearing a proper sun hat. You don’t get skin cancer after one bad sunburn. You get it from years of unprotected exposure to the sun.

Here’s a press release we wrote a couple years ago for Skin Cancer Awareness month, May, and we send it out every year.

The most popular sun protection hat for both men and women is the Adventure Hat by Sunday Afternoons:

Where Have the Easter Bonnets Gone?

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Once upon a time all little girls got a new bonnet for Easter and her mother would get a new hat for Easter as well. At last nights Good Friday service I could count on one hand the number of women wearing a hat among hundreds in attendance. What a shame. I suppose it all started when women were no longer required to cover their heads when entering a church. Since then it has been a gradual decline in the number of women wearing hats for Easter or any other special occasion. Again, what a shame.

I think what women don’t realize is that by putting on a hat you aren’t just doing it for the sake of style but it helps to put you in the right frame of mind. If wearing a hat for church it can help put you in a state of reverence just as easily as putting you in a festive mood if wearing the hat to a cocktail party or the Kentucky Derby.

If you’re not used to wearing a hat here are a couple tips to keep in mind when shopping for a hat:

- Choose a conservative color. Choosing a neon blue or fire engine red colored hat will only keep drawing your eye, and every else’s, to your hat.
- Find the appropriate brim size. If you’re barely five feet tall and 100 pounds a big 4″ or 5″ brimmed hat will look like you’re standing under an umbrella.
- Get a proper fit. Nothing will stop you from wearing a hat again faster than a hat that’s too small or too big. If it’s not comfortable you won’t wear it again.

One of the best selling women’s hats this season has been the Betmar Nile as shown here:

Betmar Nile women’s hat

Finally, one of the most important things to remember is for you to wear the hat and not let the hat wear you. What does this mean? If you wear the hat with confidence and like it’s part of you it will look completely natural. On the other hand, if you are walking around like you are trying to balance a plate on your head people will know it.

Get in the right frame of mind and get a hat on.

Peace to you this Easter season.

Yes, I’m For Real

Friday, March 21st, 2008

From time to time I get phone calls from potential customers calling that say “I’m just calling to make sure you’re real.”. In this day and age of high tech fraud people are becoming more cautious about who they do business with online. Aaron Hats is real and has a physical retail store location in North Conway, New Hampshire. Most everything you see on our web site is in the store and can be touched and tried on if you come to the store. So many online stores today are simply somebody working out of their home and they never touch a product or have never even seen the products they’re selling. What a shame that is.

Recently, I had the pleasure meeting Mr. Grossman, the president of Betmar Hats. Mr. Grossman took the time out of his schedule to come from New York to see our store. We spent a few hours talking about the headwear industry and our operation. I’m happy to say that he was so impressed with our store that he committed to doing whatever he could to help us sell more hats.

So to prove we are for real take a look at a couple of pictures of Aaron Hats retail store.

Today’s Hat Weather

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

I haven’t had much time lately to dedicate to writing this blog but I don’t want to not write either. So………..

It’s about 35 degrees with occasional snow flurries. A good hat for this kind of weather would be a wool Kangol cap. Probably a Wool Mau.

A Spring Hat For A Spring Day

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

It’s still cold here in the White Mountains of New Hampshire but it’s sunny and we’ve had some snow melting happening. So much that I was actually able to sweep the sidewalk this morning without snow getting in the way. It was so nice to be outside in the sun it put me in the mood to unpack some more spring and summer hats we recently received from Dorfman Pacific. Here are a couple examples of what I’ve unpacked:

A women’s wide brimmed raffia hat by Callanan:

and a Scala sun hat that has a paper braid crown and cotton brim:

Both of these hats provide some great sun protection and a lot of style. Tomorrow I’ll post a couple for the men.

The Greek Fisherman

Friday, March 14th, 2008

A boat docked in a tiny Greek village. An American tourist complimented the Greek fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took him to catch them.

“Not very long,” answered the Greek.

“But then, why didn’t you stay out longer and catch more?” asked the American.

The Greek explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet his needs and those of his family.

The American asked, “But what do you do with the rest of your time?”

“I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings I go into the village to see my friends, dance a little, play the bouzouki, and sing a few songs. I have a full life.”

The American interrupted, “I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you.”

You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the revenue, you can buy a bigger boat. With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middleman, you can negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can then leave this little village and move to Athens, Los Angeles, or even New York City! From there you can direct your huge enterprise.”

“How long would that take?” asked the Greek.

“Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years,” replied the American.

“And after that?”

“Afterwards? That’s when it gets really interesting,” answered the American, laughing. When your business gets really big, you can start selling stocks and make millions!”

“Millions? Really? And after that?”

“After that you’ll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your grandchildren, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife, and spend your evenings singing, dancing and playing the bouzouki with your friends.”

I found this story a few years ago (author unknown) and dig it out from time to time and it always puts a smile on my face. You may not want to be a Greek Fisherman but you can take a journey to Greece or buy a Greek Fisherman Cap from Aaron Hats.
